TrueType: The best solution
Microsoft's TrueType based strategy is aimed at solving the various problems associated with displaying fonts on the World Wide Web. Additional information about our strategy is available from our Hot topic: fonts on the Web page.
Web fonts
As an initial step Microsoft is making a number of quality fonts available for you to download, install and use within your Web pages. Furthermore, you can freely distribute these fonts from your Web site. Alternatively, you could list the fonts that you've used on your homepage and provide links to the specific font files stored on our FTP site. To see how this might work in practice see our Comic Sans Café page.
The Web fonts can be downloaded now from the Apple Macintosh Web fonts download page and the Windows 95, NT and 3.1x Web fonts download page
Specifying fonts for Web pages
Since its release in August 1995, Microsoft Internet Explorer has supported typeface choice through the FONT FACE extension to HTML. This feature is explained in our Fonts in Microsoft Internet Explorer page. At present the Microsoft Internet Explorer is the only Web browser to support font choice in this way.
Web Site designers
Microsoft Typography would like to hear from you if you are using the FONT FACE tag within you pages, distributing TrueType fonts from your site or have any tips that might be useful to other designers on utilising this feature. Please e-mail your URL or comments to ttwsite@microsoft.com. We want to produce a regularly updated page of links to sites that we consider to be making excellent use of TrueType fonts and the FONT FACE tag.
